MD has partnered with the Fundació Enric Miralles within the framework of Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture. Trencadís.py is an interactive installation that explores the intersection between traditional trencadís (mosaic) techniques a hallmark of Catalan Modernism and the possibilities offered by contemporary digital tools.
Beneath a hand-crafted lamp composed of over 170 pieces of natural wood sits Lungo Mare, an iconic, sculptural concrete urban bench—winner of the 2001 ADI-FAD Delta de Oro award designed in 1997 by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT). A beautiful projection mapping plays across the bench, tracing its undulating surface and inviting us to reflect.
What role can the construction techniques of Catalan Modernism play within contemporary production logic? And what tools do we possess today to recover, reinterpret, and project these techniques into the future?
Trencadís.py begins with these questions, exploring the encounter between a technique deeply rooted in Barcelona’s material culture and the potential of modern digital tools.
”A projection mapping traces the undulating surface of Lungo Mare"
Roger Monfort and Miquel Vilalta have created this interactive installation as a dynamic reflection on trencadís, moving it beyond its status as a mere inherited technique and reimagining it as an open field for ongoing research. The exhibition can be viewed at the Enric Miralles Foundation—a collaborating organization that will provide its entrance space for the duration of October 2026.
